What Is a Veterinary Surgeon?

While all veterinarians receive surgical training and perform many routine procedures, some conditions require advanced surgical expertise. In these cases, your primary veterinarian may recommend a board-certified veterinary surgeon.

Veterinary surgery specialists have extensive additional training and experience managing complex surgical cases. They work closely with both you and your primary veterinarian or our ER/ICU doctors before and after surgery to ensure your pet receives seamless, coordinated care throughout the treatment process.

What to Expect at Your Surgical Consultation

During your pet's consultation, you'll meet our veterinary healthcare team, including experienced veterinary technicians and your surgeon. We'll review your pet's medical history, current medications, and any concerns you may have. Your surgeon will then perform a thorough physical examination.

Additional diagnostic testing, such as bloodwork or advanced imaging, may be recommended to help guide the best treatment plan. Following the evaluation, we'll discuss our findings, review your pet's treatment options, and provide a detailed surgical estimate. If surgery is recommended, we'll schedule the procedure—typically within one to four weeks.

What Surgeries Do We Perform?

Our surgical team performs a wide range of procedures, including soft tissue, oncologic, minimally invasive, orthopedic, and neurologic surgeries. Throughout every stage of care, we prioritize patient safety, comfort, and effective pain management to support a smooth recovery.

Soft Tissue Procedures:

• Complex gastrointestinal surgery

• Airway surgery – arytenoid lateralization (tie-back) and brachycephalic surgery

• Hepatobiliary surgery

• Thoracic surgery including thoracoscopic pericardiectomy

• Arthroscopy

• Early treatment for hip and elbow dysplasia

• Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) Surgery – hemilaminectomy and ventral cervical slot surgery
